Changing atmospheric <supscr>14</supscr>C and the record of deep water paleoventilation ages

چکیده

We propose a new calculation method to better estimate the deep water ventilation age from benthic-planktonic foraminifera 14C ages. Our study is motivated by the fact that changes in atmospheric A14C through time can cause contemporary benthic and planktonic foraminifera to have different initial A14C values. This effect can cause spurious ventilation age changes tobe interpreted from the geologic data. Using a new calculation method, 14C projection ages, we recalculate the data from the Pacific Ocean. Contrary to previous results, we find that the Pacific intermediate and deep waters were about 600 years older than today at the last glacial maximum. In addition, there are possible signals of ventilation age change prior to ice sheet melting and at the Younger Dryas. However, the data are still too sparse to constrain these ventilation transients.

Analysis of atmospheric inputs of nitrate to a temperate forest ecosystem from <supscr>17</supscr>O isotope ratio measurements

[1] Determining the fate of atmospheric N deposited in forest ecosystems is essential to understanding the ecological impact of increased anthropogenic N deposition. We hypothesize that a significant fraction of soil nitrate (dry deposited HNO3 and wet deposited NO3 ) in northern Michigan is derived from atmospheric deposition. To test this idea, soil, rainfall, and cloud water were sampled in ...

Positionally dependent <supscr>15</supscr>N fractionation factors in the UV photolysis of N<subscr>2</subscr>O determined by high resolution FTIR spectroscopy

Positionally dependent fractionation factors for the photolysis of isotopomers of N20 in natural abundance have been determined by high resolution FTIR spectroscopy at three photolysis wavelengths. Fractionation factors show clear lSN position and photolysis wavelength dependence and are in qualitative agreement with theoretical models but are twice as large. The fractionation factors increase ...

Radiocarbon Reservoir Age of High Latitude North Atlantic Surface Water During the Last Glacial

The radiocarbon reservoir age of high latitude North Atlantic Ocean surface water is essential for linking the continental and marine climate records, and is expected to vary according to changes in North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) production. Measurements from this region also provide important input and/or tests of oceanic radiocarbon using 3-D global ocean circulation models. Here, we presen...
